This remains a richly textured and weighty ros , despite the fact that its color seems lighter than previous vintages. It's almost entirely Grenache, with bits of Shiraz (4%), Cabernet Sauvignon (2%) and Dolcetto (1%) filling out the blend. Hints of berries, ripe melon and white chocolate end on a mouthwatering citrus note, but this is built for the beefy side of your grilling menu.

Estate

A majority varietal, a dying breed in the Napa Valley, this also has 5% Petite Sirah. The combination is dense and syrupy in strawberry and a tightness of oak. Time will soften its edges, and there's already a softness to the tannins that delights, the finish light and lean. Cellar through 2017.

A dark, almost black color is a reminder of Petit Verdot's traditional use to give color in the Bordeaux blend. The wine also has a stylish, aromatic character that brings out black fruits and generous tannins. It's rich and still young. Drink from 2017.

Cape Winemakers Guild Geel-Kapel

Winemaker: Adi Badenhorst. Leave it to Swartland renegade Badenhorst to bring something different and unique to the table. This Muscat Blanc was aged in an oak cask for a year and a half, then bottled unfiltered, resulting in a slightly hazy, golden-yellow pour that opens with insanely intense, rich notes of clove-spiked orange rind, potpourri, ginger-peach candies, pineapple core, dried apricot and marmalade. There's no shortage of flavor here, either, as those notes carry through to the round, slightly tannic palate of texture and length. Spicy and powerful, this is a pleasure to drink now or can be held through 2021.

Etre

Imagine a liquid Key-lime pie but not so sweet. Light yellow in color with a faint green hue, this smells like lime juice and tastes bright and citrus-like. It turns richer on the midpalate and finish, as lime and cream flavors come to the front and stay through the aftertaste.

Anno Primo

Aromas of underbrush, tilled soil, leather, red berry and mint come together in the glass. The focused palate delivers dried cherry, licorice, tobacco, grilled sage and a precise mineral vein alongside chewy but fine-grained tannins. It's still young and tightly wound but should open up over the next few years. Drink 2016C2023.

Firm aromas of oak grain, licorice, black cherry and blackberry precede an alert, spunky palate. Blackberry and cassis notes with juicy acidity drive the flavor profile toward a long, warm finish. This is easy to like and well made; drink through 2016.

This ambitious wine is bold in every aspect, from the deep, deep color, to the dark chocolate and cherry aromas to the rich, almost thick blackberry flavors and very firm texture. It has the variety's typical assertive tartness plus a good layer of tannin, but matches those with ripe flavors.

Montessu

This blend of 60% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Syrah opens with aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit and ground spice. The concentrated, one-dimensional palate doles out fleshy blackberry, black cherry and black pepper alongside velvety tannins.

Cooked-down blackberries take on pink peppercorn and new leather aromas in this Malbec hailing from the high-altitude vineyards of Colorado. The dark berry tones of the palate carry shards of graphite, with zippy red currant acidity keeping the full body and grainy tannins in check. It's a bit tight right now and should open up after 2016.

Old Vine

Chocolate and dark cherry aromas lead to ripe plum, boysenberry and blackberry flavors that are almost sweet, very rich and full bodied. The thick texture melts in your mouth, having soft tannins. This drinks almost like a Port and should be great with chocolate or cheese.

Tight and structured, this mineral, nervy wine tastes of stony vineyards and tenacious grapes. It is cool in character, with lemon and green stone-fruit flavors that leave a crisp impression. Drink from 2017.

Nik Weis Wiltinger Alte Reben

Despite a tropical nose, reminiscent of sun-ripened pineapple, this off-dry Riesling is cutting and crisp, full of tart nectarine and apricot flavors. It's not a richly concentrated wine, but elegant and brisk. The finish is moderately long, ending on delicate blossom tone.
